Competition #3: Salt Lake City

So it's been a special week. It all started with the competition on Saturday......

Yes, we did not travel this time. It was not quite as exciting but also a nice break from all of the craziness involved with traveling. Well, at least that's what I was thinking. The meet took place at Salt Lake Community College. I would be lying if I told you that I was extremely overjoyed, because I had a really frustrating two weeks of workout.

Level 8's and 9's were together, and we started at 3:00. The first part of the meet went really well. My shoulder was aching during the first two events, but it wasn't anything I couldn't just shake off. We started on vault. (FYI, gymnasts compete two vaults, and they can be different.) Usually, just to play it safe, I compete a tuck then a pike, but my coach has been wanting me to compete two pikes, because they are a higher start value than tucks. (By the way, I mean Yurchenko tuck and pike, not just a random back flip. I did a skill explanation on it previously.) I competed two decent vaults, and scored a 9.15.

Bars was next but my shoulder was still kind of hurting and I wasn't as consistent and confident as I should be to compete, so my coach and I decided to warm everything up, but not compete. Then we went to beam. Beam had been going really well in practice so I was extra confident and kind of excited. I hit my beam routine, and scored another 9.1.

Then we went to floor. We warm up tumbling and leaps in between routines when the judges are figuring out scores. I was doing a front handspring, front layout, front pike, which is usually pretty easy for me, when I hyperextended my knee and heard and felt a pop. Let me tell you, it hurt like crazy. The shock from it shielded some of the pain, but not enough. The medic came over and tried to talk with me, but I was freaking out. I could see my family in the crowd and everyone else in the gym staring at the crumpled girl on the floor. When I finally recovered my coaches and the medic carried me over to a mat, where I sat and iced while the medic twisted and pushed my knee which was very painful. She said that she was pretty sure I hadn't broken a bone, or torn my entire ACL (which is a common injury for hyperextentions in gymnastics) but that it was a little loose. I couldn't move my knee or even keep it pointing up. Because I there was no way I was going to walk, they had to wheel me out on an equipment cart.
Still at the meet with my teammates and coach icing.
It was definitely the best exit that anyone made at that meet. We went to the hospital and the doctor took x-rays. She didn't see anything, but we did find out that I have Osgood Schlatters, which really isn't a big deal because pretty much every gymnast I know has it. After she did the painful motion tests, she said that I had sprained my Lateral Collateral Ligament pretty badly, and might have either bruised (not that big of a deal), or torn (kind of a big deal) my meniscus. She wasn't sure if I had damaged my ACL or not. Because of these two possibilities, she said to get an MRI on Monday. Then she gave me a ginormous brace and crutches. Fun! Not.
Showing of my snazzy brace and crutches in the hospital. (Notice the lovely, free hospital socks.)

Now, after a long night, and lots of icing and elevating, it's Sunday. I found out from my teammates that I got 1st on vault and 2nd on beam. I've pretty much stayed in the same spot all day. I'll keep posting updates on what I find out.

Update!!!

So I had my MRI on Monday but the hospital hasn't contacted us yet! Ahhhh! I've scheduled an appointment with an orthopedic for Tuesday, too. And.......... I got both Uggs on! :D In case you didn't know, I have been walking around school with one tennis shoe and one Ugg but I am proud to announce that I managed to put it on. With a little help.

Update Again!!!

The hospital sent us the report: 3 strains, a joint infusion, "evidence of non displaced fractures", and whole bunch of other doctor talk that I didn't really understand. I'm still going to an Orthopedic to see what he thinks, and overall that's a lot better than it could have been. Yay!
