My World of Tiny Accomplishments

You know, aside from being on crutches, not being able to do gym, and my left leg turning into a tiny little stick, one downside to fracturing my tibia is not having anything to write about, due to fact that I pretty much do nothing all day long, all week long. Another sad thing is that right now, I should be in California, getting ready to compete, jumpy and excited from my nerves. Instead, I am here, in Comp Tech, with nothing to do.... *Sigh.

Alrighty then, enough with the self pity party. Here are a few things that become huge accomplishments when you have an injured knee/on crutches.

1. Managing to get over an obstacle on the floor. Sadly, I don't mean a huge hurdle, or a box that is four feet tall. I mean a cord, or a shoe, or bump in the floor. It's hard enough transporting yourself across an empty floor on crutches, but over a shoe! I mean, come on guys, this is obviously a huge deal. (Please keep in mind that the last part of that was said in a sarcastic voice.)

2. Climbing a flight of stairs in less than 5 minutes. It is so awkward going up stairs. Swing your good leg up onto a step, then procede with putting your crutches on the same stair. Good leg, crutches. Good leg, crutches. It takes so long and requires so much work it's like you've conquered the world when you reach the top, even though in reality, you've only conquered one floor.

3. Being able to stand. On Thursday I went to Physical Therapy and was cleared to be 50% weight-bearing. That means I can stand on both feet equally! I can also walk with some pressure on it but still with my crutches.

4. Carrying something larger than a phone across the room. Or better yet, across your entire house! It's pretty awkward to try to carry something and guide my crutch around, but now that I have gotten better at using them, I am better at multitasking with them.

5. Getting to class on time. It's nice to know that going into class, you won't have the entire class staring at me because I am late. I'm a lot slower than I was without crutches, I can still get to most of my classes on time, with exception of the ones with the high school involved.

6. Recovering from a major stumble or trip. It's very surprising how many times I randomly trip on my crutches. The rubber tips keep catching on hard floors and carpet. We could blame it on the tips. Or my clumsiness, or my seemingly decreasing coordination. Recovering and pretending like it never happened is always a plus when this happens, especially when no one around you notices.

7. Being able to sneak up on someone. Just kidding. That's impossible. (In case you haven't heard me from across the country, crutches are freaking loud!) BUT I WILL DO IT! And when I do, it will be an incomparable feat.
How I feel when I do any of these things. And yes, I did use this picture again...

Woo hoo! Go me! And good luck to my teammates this weekend!
