For the Medicine Camp, there were two different groups. The first group goes in the morning and the second group goes in the afternoon. Yesterday, my TA was pretty sure we were in the morning, so he listed a ton of reasons why being in the afternoon was terrible.
We were in the afternoon.
So then, we got all mad at him, and tried to negotiate him buying us creams or donuts. It didn't work. We did sleep in a few extra minutes, then went to a lecture that explained a big project we would be presenting in front of the whole conference. We worked on our project for an hour and a half, and got a good amount done.
We got on the buses for the ropes course at lunch time, and ate our box lunches (which were like gourmet lunches in a box) and then spent an hour driving down through oakland and across the bay.
When we first arrived, we did a few stretches and trust falls. Then we did the "stretcher," which despite sounding like a medieval torture method, was very fun. There are two wires extending out in a V, and you and a partner have to lean into each other in order to get to the end. On my second try, I finally got to the end with my partner, Eric, at which point we were both nearly horizontal and using sheer shoulder strength and shaking like an earthquake.
We then moved to the high ropes, and I was the first to go with one course. It was pretty easy and ended with an exhilarating zip line. I was about to next up for the other one when we had to switch, so I ended up being first on that one, too. You would climb up a tree and onto a wire. There was a long rope hanging down from the tree that was long enough for you to get halfway across the wire. On the other side was another person heading towards the middle. When you reached each other, you had to maneuver around the other person and switch ropes so you could reach the other side. IT. WAS. TERRIFYING. I made it to the end and did it a second time, which was a lot better.
This isn't me but gives you an idea of how high up and how awkward it is. |
We took the bus back to campus and had a small activity on medical ethics, then had a "dyadic encounter" which is where you pretty much just have an hour and a half conversation with one or two other people in your group. It definitely helped me get to know those people better.

Tomorrow we will be going to Gladstone, an insane research facility, and Fisherman's Wharf/Ghiradelli Square.
Be sure to check out the new timeline I'm trying out. :)
